Good News - South Africa Uniform Project

Uniform Project Update: May 2012

The Uniform Project is one of several projects operated under the auspices of Teachers Across Borders South Africa (TABSA). This project provides school uniforms for deserving learners in several rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal Province who cannot afford them. Uniforms consist of slacks or skirt, shirt or blouse, tie, socks, shoes, and jersey.

The Uniform Project works with the administration of Mdlangaswa High School (Kwamadlala Location, Port Shepstone). The principal, Mr. Ray Cele, and his staff select the deserving learners. TABSA also works with Ziphakamise, a self-help organization based in Port Shepstone. (http://www.ziphakamise.org.za) . Impoverished and deserving elementary school learners are selected by the organization’s social worker.

In April, 2012, 25 learners from Mdlangaswa High School received uniforms. Ziphakamise has begun providing uniforms to 20 learners in the areas in which it serves. TABSA collaborates with Rotary International 9720 Port Shepstone in the administration of this project. Rotary International holds funds from TABSA that will provide for another 25 sets of uniforms for Mdlangaswa HS and 20 pairs of shoes for Ziphakamise in 2013.

The Uniform Project is fortunate to receive additional support. We wish to thank First Car Rental for the donation of a rental vehicle during the course and scope of our work from March 14 through April 15, 2012.

TABSA hopes to expand this project to benefit more learners in more rural schools in 2012-2013. Please consider supporting this project. We have a solid infrastructure, accountability, critical need in rural areas, and much gratitude for your generosity.

Sincerely,
Jay Seidenstein
Director, Uniform Project, TABSA

TEACHERS ACROSS BORDERS

Why do all of us look to education as a bedrock of life, hope, and peace?

It is because education can inspire and create depth, meaning and purpose in our lives. With it we hope to find answers to the persistent issues of poverty, gender inequality, child trafficking, and lack of freedom and choices. We look to teachers as the fundamental building block in our pursuit of learning. This is where Teachers Across Borders, Inc. can make a difference.

Our teacher volunteers from the U.S., Sweden, Australia and other countries go to places like Cambodia, Myanmar and South Africa to help teachers who face enormous challenges including low pay, minimal facilities, class sizes of 75 or more, few materials and no teacher training. This is where we help out. Our aim is to model good teaching and to inspire, collaborate, support and value the work of our teacher colleagues. Through “Teachers Teaching Teachers” programs we share content  and training ideas with fellow teachers. The collaboration inspires not just our trainees but our volunteers. For many it is a life changing experience. Helping one Cambodian teacher affects the education and lives of hundreds of children. You can help by becoming a teacher volunteer or donating money and time to our programs. The video below is an introduction to our work.
