On December 26, 2003 an earthquake devastated the ancient city of Bam in Iran. The disaster took the lives of more than 40,000 people and left thousands homeless. Many schools were destroyed along with the infrastructure that had made travel to and from school and the operation of schools possible.

The American service organization Mercy Corps has an office in southern Iran, so their volunteers were the first to arrive with food and blankets on the night of the quake. They brought safe drinking water to Bam, set up temporary housing, and safe latrines and showers. They provided activities for children who had no school to attend. Their next project iwas to rebuild the Bam Primary School that was destroyed.

Teachers Across Borders provided school supplies for children attending Bam Primary School.
